Concord Rangers kick started their 2017/18 BBC Essex Senior Cup campaign with an emphatic victory on a cold, wet night at The Aspect Arena this Tuesday.

A delayed kick-off was the first bit of news of the night after the visitors hit traffic problems getting on to Concord Island, but when things finally got under way 20 minutes late, the Beachboys quickly found their feet and started to take control of the game.

Possession was dominated early by Concord Rangers, and on 12 minutes it paid off after they earned a free kick just outside the penalty area. Ben Greenhalgh stepped up and calmly curled the ball into the net as the ‘keeper appeared to have left acres of space in the goalmouth.

Just 7 minutes later another Concord attack resulted in a goal, with a low ball being put in from the right drawing the Town ‘keeper off his line, allowing Adam Topley to calmly tap the ball into an empty net.

The visitors were still struggling to get a foothold in the game, with a light rain coming down the pitch was slick and more often than not it was a Wivenhoe pass that didn’t exactly go where it was intended, allowing Concord to capitalise and maintain a high level of possession against their lower league opposition.

Femi Akinwande was unlucky not to score after breaking through for a one on one with the Town ‘keeper who pulled off a cracking reaction save, and he kept the visitors in the game shortly after as again Akinwande used his strength and speed to beat two Dragons defenders and fire off a shot, only to see Aaron Reid in the Town goal push the ball wide.

As the first half was drawing to a close, one of the Concord players fell to the floor injured deep in the Wivenhoe half, however the lads kept on playing and were able to actually use it to their advantage, with Steve King being able to tap the ball into another empty net in an almost carbon copy of the second goal.

Wivenhoe started the second half better than the first, getting more possession in the game, however they were never really able to cause the home side any troubles with it. Steve Cawley then had a goal chalked off for offside, and Kyron Farrell had a header cleared off the line after hitting the bar, before Ben Greenhalgh got his second of the night having breezed past 2 Town defenders and calmly slotting the ball past the advancing Aaron Reid.

The second half ended with Concord Rangers notching up a further two goals, both from club captain Steve Cawley, the first on 76 minutes when he slotted the ball home, and then again on 82 minutes in spectacular fashion with a fantastic volley from just inside the box.

The Beachboys were well worth their win, and could well have won by more on another day. Now Concord Rangers await their fate in the BBC Essex Senior Cup Fourth Round draw which is due to take place from 7pm on Wednesday 8th November
