Concord Rangers vs Havant & Waterlooville

Saturday 1st February 2020

On Saturday, Concord Rangers welcomed Havant and Waterlooville to the Aspect Arena for another Vanarama National League South match. The first time the two sides met this season was back in October, where Havant took the 3 points after winning 2-1 against the Beachboys.

Concord’s starting line-up included Chris Haigh, David Olufemi, Nathan Carlyle, Billy Roast, Lee Minshull, Aron Pollock, Lamar Reynolds, Henry Woods, Kit Elliott, James Blanchfield and Joel Nouble. The substitutes were Danny Green, Decarrey Sheriff, Michael O’Donoghue, Kreshnic Krasniqi and Ben Wells.

The Beachboys got off to a positive start, with possible chances being created by Carlyle and Roast, but on both occasions the Havant goalkeeper claimed the ball comfortably. In the 10th minute, Roast sent the ball across the pitch over to Nouble, who brought it down with ease and crossed it into the box. The goalkeeper appeared to spill the ball, however no Concord player was on there to react quick enough and Worner managed to claim it.

There was some controversy in the 17th minute after Carlyle’s attempt to cross the ball into the box was blocked by the hand of the Havant defender who appeared to be positioned in the penalty area. The Beachboys appealed for a penalty, however the referee called for a free kick on the edge of the box. Blanchfield was the man who took the kick, his cross met the head of Pollock, but the ball unfortunately flew over the crossbar.

The Hawks created a scoring opportunity at the 30 minute mark, however Olufemi made a brilliant tackle to stop the attack and send the ball out for a corner. The final chance of the half came for Havant as Kedwell’s shot smashed against the side netting. Despite both sides both creating good opportunities throughout the first half, neither were able to find the back of the net.

Half Time: Concord Rangers 0-0 Havant & Waterlooville

It didn’t take long before Concord were on the attack once again, as only a minute into the second half Nouble was fouled just outside of Havant’s penalty area. Blanchfield stepped up to take the kick but his shot was safely caught by the keeper. A few minutes later Blanchfield delivered the ball into the box again towards Elliott, but his header fell narrowly wide of the post.

Both teams were creating attacking opportunities for themselves, however there was not much to test either goalkeeper. There were calls for a potential Havant penalty 15 minutes into the half after Pollock made a challenge on the attacker, but the referee signalled for a corner of which nothing came of for the Hawks.

The final chance of the game fell to Lamar Reynolds as his shot was tipped over the crossbar by Worner.

Full Time: Concord Rangers 0-0 Havant & Waterlooville

In a very competitive and entertaining match, neither side were able to break and get the goal that would give them the 3 points. The point gained from the fixture means that the Beachboys currently sit midtable in 13th. Now, the boys look forward to a busy schedule in terms of fixtures, starting at home to Chelmsford on Tuesday 4th February in the BBC Essex Senior Cup.
