We caught up with manager Adam Flanagan after Saturday’s narrow defeat to Maidstone to find out his thoughts on the result and performance.
An excellent performance but alas no points…were you pleased with the performance anyway?
I was pleased with the performance as it was a vast improvement on the last home game against Hayes and Yeading. For me it showed if we believe in ourselves and everyone maintains a good level of performance every game that we can give run the teams at the very top of the league close.
The team had a good solid shape, and the effort given cannot be understated, is it just the fine margins at this level, which make the difference?
Yes I would say it is. The league we are in is very unforgiving where mistakes get punished on most occasions and Saturday showed that. I think Saturday was typical of a team on a winning run and still managing to win games when they aren’t playing well and a team who have had an indifferent start to the season and being punished for nearly every mistake. Maidstone are a good team and I felt on Saturday we showed we are as well, we just need to show each team we play every week from now on.
Were you happy with how many times we tested the Maidstone goal, considering they’ve only conceded 7 goals all season?
The players put a lot of effort into Saturday and they are punishing themselves now for the two mistakes that cost us the game. They performed admirably against a very good team on Saturday and if we play like that every week we will win more games than we lose this season. We were able to score against a team that hadn’t conceded for many games and apart from the keeper we might have added to that. We created numerous chances and on a different day we win the game. It wasn’t meant to be so we work hard in the week and move onto next Saturday away to Weston.
