With twenty-four goals last season, the Beachboys earlier this week were delighted to announce that Golden Boot winner Steve Cawley has re-signed for the 2016/2017 campaign.

We caught up with Steve to find out the reasons behind his decision and a lot more…

After your goalscoring exploits last season, there was a lot of interest in you for the next campaign. What are the reasons why you re-signed with Concord?

Yes there were a few clubs showing interest, including one from the National League. For me it was always going to be hard, but with the added pressure of my first baby on the way it was going to be a different thought process for me and a longer time to think about everything.  But in the end I felt it was hard to leave such a beautiful club where I have continued to progress, and that’s all down to how much I enjoy being here.

Seeing the core of last season’s team re-sign, was that an important factor in your decision as well?

That was a huge boost! Seeing the likes of El Capitano, Sammy, Jay etc signing back on was a big thing for me to re-sign.  I am gutted to see Lewis Taaffe go because he was a good friend of mine, as well as a key player for us, but I hope he does well in his move.  However I’m going to miss him!

Your goal tally is improving with every season, what is the aim for next season…30???

My target is always to reach fifteen first. But I would like to reach twenty-five league goals this year, so throw in a few cup goals and yeah why not 30! That would mean I’ve had and the club’s had a successful season.

Saying that, what is an achievable ambition for the Beachboys in 2016/2017?

The season just gone, we were right in the fight for the play-off positions until the last 5/6 games, so with a few tweaks, I can’t see any reason why we can’t push for a play-off place. We of course want to make history by winning the Essex Senior Cup for the 4th time in a row, and every player wants to have a run in the FA Cup, so to make the 1st round proper again is a target. But let’s not forget the FA trophy as well.  There’s plenty to play for next season!
