Concord Rangers Walking Football Blue team manager Ian Johnston-Pooley has provided an update on how our Walking Football sides have been doing over the past season…

The league for the over 50’s has now finished with the Yellow’s finishing 4th and the Blue’s finishing 7th, so a good season all round with everyone enjoying themselves. Our new season starts in March 2020 and we are also looking for new players to join in with training, which takes place every Saturday from 10:45am at Waterside Leisure Centre, finishing at around 12:15, with a £2.10  entrance fee payable to Waterside.

On Sunday we travelled to Clacton On Sea for a tournament against 5 other teams, first up was Damned Utd who turned out to be an equal opponent with a 1-1 draw with Cliff Tatham opening his goal account. Next up was Grays WFC who played a few times during the season before they withdrew from the league due to a lack of players. They put up a good defence after watching our first game so man marked Cliff, but couldn’t stop his shot on goal and half time our guys were 1-0 up. The second half saw a Grays defender enter their own goal area, prompting the Ref to award us a penalty, which Cliff promptly put in top right hand corner before the final whistle blew.

Game 3 was against Braintree WFC, a team we’d not played before. They’d just won their previous game 2-0 so was on a high, Clive opened the scoring for us 3 minutes in, which was quickly followed by another goal from Cliff, giving us a 2-0 lead at half time. It was a bit of a stalemate in the second half, with each team having a couple of shots each with both keepers making very good saves, then Peter got the ball just inside their half on the right and took a shot diagonal across the keeper in to the bottom left corner of the goal, and that was game over for Braintree. Game 4 was against Felixstowe Walkers Beach, all their players were over 60 and 4 were over 70, needless to say we beat them 7-0 with 4 goals for Cliff, 2 for Clive and 1 for Kelvin, but they showed the right spirit of the game and gave us good banter throughout, it was a pleasure to play them.

Our last game was against the hosts Clacton Rhinos, who had mixed ages of over 50’s and 60’s in their team. They were another good team to play against who played in the right spirit of the game, with 2 goals from Cliff and 1 from Clive the game was wrapped up just after the start of the second half. With a 3-1 win we topped the league with a better goal difference with the Damned Utd in second.

Our squad for the tournament was Keeper Chris Lawledge, defenders Stuart Bogle and Joe Tonner, midfielder Clive Beauchamp, and Kelvin Luxton & Cliff Tatham up front. Our subs were Yellow Team Player Manager Graham Nelson and Peter Quinn.
