Wealdstone                       2

Benyon 25, Fitchett 57

Concord Rangers              1

Cox 47

Att 752, HT 1-0

It wasn’t exactly the opening day that Concord Rangers were looking for as they fell away to old rivals Wealdstone this past Saturday afternoon.

With a younger, newer team Concord Rangers took to the field at The Vale looking to start the season with 3 points which would be huge given how busy the opening month of the season looks to be. However the start was far from ideal, as the Stones were quick to launch attack after attack and test the entirely new Beachboys back line and ‘keeper (the latter, Louis Wells, had been announced as a signing the night before).

Whilst Concord had their chances, these were mainly on the counter attack and neither Lewis Taaffe nor Steve Cawley could get the ball past Stones ‘keeper North. Wealdstone were leading the way with attempts on goal, but missed the majority of them, even sending the ball sky high and into the crowd when in on an open goal. The deadlock was finally broken 25 minutes in as Oshodi’s effort was deflected back off the bar and Benyon was able to slot the rebound it past Wells.

Wealdstone ended the half much the same as they had started it, with chances abound falling by the wayside and somehow only went in 1-0 up.

Concord Rangers started the second half much brighter, and it took just 2 minutes for Jordan Cox to rise above all others at a rare Concord corner and head the ball calmly into the back of the net, giving the small but loyal travelling Beachboys contingent something to shout about.

The away fans weren’t cheering for too long though, as the frailties of the Concord back line were capitalised on just 10 minutes later when Dan Fitchett slotted the ball into the back of the net after a corner wasn’t cleared.

All three subs and a late free kick couldn’t bring Concord Rangers level before the final whistle blew, giving the Beachboys a disappointing start to their 2017/18 campaign.

Next up will be Hemel Hempstead Town this coming Tuesday night as Concord Rangers host their first game at The Aspect Arena this season.
