It’s been a busy close season for the Beachboys with a number of new signings and a certain player returning to the club, and we’ll be catching up with them all before the season starts.

First up, we chatted to Billy Roast and why he decided to sign up for Concord this season

“I think Concord are the perfect club for young player’s looking to progress, as there is so much opportunity for player’s to shine at this club. The manager gives young player’s a chance and it’s up to the individual to express themselves and take that opportunity. I have a real desire to get back into the professional game, and this is a great club to really push myself on.”

Billy spent his formative years as a young professional at Colchester United – “Growing up in a professional environment, training everyday was an excellent start to my career, I was around experienced centre backs that had played at the highest level, such as John McGreal and Richard Hall, and I used that to my advantage. I learnt so much from the pair of them.”

Billy spent time at Maldon and Tiptree, which helped ease him into the step from Academy football to the men’s game as he confirmed to me “Maldon was important to me for two reasons, firstly it was to get as many games in one season at men’s football, after I suffered a few injuries at Colchester, another reason was to adapt from Academy football to men’s football. A transition I think I made very well.”

So what kind of centre back is Billy, well who better than the player himself to explain, “I used to play in midfield when I was younger, so that’s helped me become a ball playing centre back.  I like to bring the ball out from the back and create things as well, however I’m not afraid of doing the horrible side of things as well, and putting it in where it hurts!”

Billy is certainly looking forward to the new season at the Aspect Arena, and has high hopes for the 2017/2018 season – “I don’t think you can go into any season not confident. We should be looking to contend for the title and to be as successful as we can possibly can be. I’m really confident about the season ahead, I can’t wait for it to start!”
