The season got off to a flying start for Chris Search and his team after the beachboys claimed all three points in a 1-0 win against Dorking Wanderers on the opening day. This fixture has always been known to be a feisty affair and today’s occasion was no different.

The visitors almost took the lead in the 20th minute after the ball was headed in by Joshua Taylor. After initial uncertainty as to whether or not the ball had actually crossed the line, the referee awarded a free kick to the beachboys following a hand-ball. Only a few minutes later, Aron Pollock almost opened the scoring, however his effort was cleared off of the line by James McShane.

The first 45 minutes presented good chances for both teams, but the second half was where we saw most of the action.

Myles Roberts had an outstanding game in his first competitive start for the beachboys, and managed to keep the opposition at bay with an excellent save following Alfie Rutherford’s low driven shot which was heading towards the bottom right corner.

The beachboys had some superb periods of play, one of which led to an effort from Wyan Reid following some excellent combination passing between Pollock and Lamar Reynolds, however the goalkeeper managed to keep the ball out.

The deadlock finally broke in the 72nd minute when Reynolds was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty for the beachboys. Temi Babalola stepped up to take the kick and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

In the 90th minute Dorking had the perfect opportunity to equalise and salvage a point from the game after they were awarded a penalty following a challenge on Rutherford. However, Roberts stepped up once again and made a superb save to retain the lead.

Seconds before the game ended even more drama unfolded as Taylor was shown a red card after pushing Joseph Boachie over the advertising boards. The visitors were then forced to finish the game with 10 men.

After a scrappy start for both teams, it was the beachboys who came out on top to claim the first points of the 2021/22 season. The team will be looking to build on a solid performance as they travel away to Oxford City next Saturday in their next league fixture.
