LEAGUE leaders Boreham Wood took away a fortuitous point in a thrilling encounter at the Aspect Arena, writes Jack Smith.
Concord could have been mistaken for having one eye on Tuesday’s FA Cup first round tie with Mansfield, but it didn’t show as they fought back excellently to dominate the second half and earn a point in a game they should have won.
Wood started brightly and moved the ball around well with the lively Junior Morias coming close, flashing a shot millimeters wide of the right hand post.
It was the visitors who went on to take a deserved lead with a bit of fortune creating an opening via a ricochet for Graeme Montgomerie, who stroked the ball beneath debutant Arsenal loanee keeper Josh Vickers from close range.
Concord came alive in the second half and caused problems for the Boreham back four.
Sam Collins almost equalised immediately from the restart with a hard low strike drawing a quality save from James Russell.
Steve Cawley was next to come close, finding space at the back post with his effort well blocked by Luke Garrard.
Another chance went narrowly astray as the nippy Jordan Chiedozie met the cross of Joe Gardner, but volleyed over the crossbar.
Boreham were limited to a couple of tame, off-target efforts in the second half having been shut out by the Beachboys back four.
By now Concord were banging loudly on the door and the leveller came with a superb move culminating in a Danny Glozier cross which was converted by Chiedozie with a thumping header into the bottom left hand corner.
A yellow kitchen sink was thrown at the visitors in the closing stages and they thought they’d won it as the ball fell kindly for Joe Gardner a couple of yards out, but he could only agonisingly scuff a left footed effort which was cleared off the line by Callum Reynolds.
One last piece of drama saw a whipped corner expertly delivered by Collins which rebounded off Garrard and almost found the bottom corner before ghosting just wide.
Concord manager Danny Cowley said “We are disappointed not to win the game but proud of the level of performance we have given.
“Boreham Wood are a terrific side who deservedly lead this division but today they were hanging on against us.
“In the second half I thought we out worked and out run them.
“We take only one point from the game but most importantly we take huge confidence in knowing that we have that much work ethic and desire within the group.”
