Rangers workhorse Alan Jessup-Peacock offers league sponsors Vanarama a personal take on all things Concord – and there’s a lot to look forward to!
It was a summer of transition for the club. So far, so good?
I’d say so, mid-table going into the Christmas period, in the quarter finals of both county cup competitions and equalling our best ever run in the FA Trophy. I think it helped that our “new” manager has been around the club for so long and knows the people, knows how it works, and knows what the mentality is around here.
But what does 2020 hold?
Hopefully more of the same, further progress in those cups I mentioned and establishing ourselves in the the top half of the table. We’ve also seen some great U18 lads break into the first team squad (Alex Hernandez, Archie McFadden, Ben Search), so I have a feeling that 2020 will see these lads improve and establish themselves as first team regulars
If you can wrap up one Christmas gift for your manager, what would it be?
A place in the third round of the FA Trophy, making it our best run ever. A lot of our records have come in the recent history of the club, mainly when the Cowleys were in charge, I think it’d be good to see Scopesy be at the helm when we break another big club record.
Pick your National League South title winner:
Wealdstone would be everyone’s pick right now, and it’s tough to bet against them. Every club has a slip at some point or another, and a team like Slough or Weymouth will be there to capitalise, but I don’t think they’ll have enough to bridge the gap that’s already formed.
The Christmas and New Year calendar – love it or hate it?
From a fans’ perspective, I love it. There’s barely a day without football at one level or another and its a handy escape from the full on family experience over Xmas! However, as a programme editor, I hate it! There’s always an early print deadline for the Xmas shutdown, so my workload leading up to this time increases massively, and the possibility of postponements etc due to the winter weather always adds to the stress as well
Who is your Player of 2019?
For me this is a question of two halves. The back end of last season I would say it was Tyrone Sterling, the guy was massive for us as the 2018/19 season ended and was the best and most consistent player we had. Of course then the summer of change happened and 2019/20 has been very different. Chris Haigh has been excellent in goal for us this year, the young lad has shone and saved us plenty of points between the sticks, so I’d say Chris. Honourable mentions though go to Kresh, Jack Cawley and Joel Nouble, who have all worked their socks off for us this season.
Your most memorable away day so far this season?
This season, admittedly I’ve been slacking with the away days, and I’ve not seen us win away this year. We seem to do better away when I’m not there, take the win this past weekend against Maidstone. The lads went 2-0 down and came back to win 3-2 in the FA Trophy, and from what the guys have said, the atmosphere was excellent, getting a result for our 40/50 fans there in front of around 1000 Stones fans.
When did you first start following your club and why?
I started coming to watch Concord when a mate who was on the backroom staff (Miki Hood) invited me along. The club was just around the corner from where I lived at the time, it was massively cheaper than the £45/£50 I was paying to watch West Ham, and there was more determination and passion for the game with the players. It didn’t take long to get to know the people around the club too, and it was their welcome and the family feel of the place that kept me coming back. Ten years later I’m still a fan, but I’m also the matchday programme editor now, and have been for 5 years now
What makes the club so special?
I touched on it in that last answer, the family feel of the club when I first came down, guys like the Cowleys, Ant, Jack & Jack Jnr, Jayne, Stokesy and Miki all made me feel like part of the club. Obviously people come and go from the club, but the core is still there and despite there being some slips in the past where the passion has wavered slightly, it’s still the place I go to and I love the atmosphere around Concord Rangers
